Considering an early January 2017 ski trip staying at South Shore. I know the ski conditions can be dicey but would like to hear of anyone's experiences at this resort. How far of a drive to the nearest ski mountain? (I assume it is Heavenly) We would fly into Reno and it looks to be about an hours drive to the resort. We have always skied Utah (Park City/Canyons) but thought about giving Tahoe a try. Any experiences/advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

This is a nice, newer resort on Hwy. 50 which is the Lake Tahoe "strip." It is no more than a 5 min. drive to the Heavenly Gondola. There is a shopping center with a major grocery store and restaurants and bars a block away.

I would rent a 4WD - if it snows, you will have to have chains or 4WD.

Heavenly is the closest, and I think one of the best at Tahoe.

I have not had the fortune to stay in South Shore, but reviews of it are that it is excellent. It is only a couple miles.

You should plan a little more than an hour to the resort from Reno. It's definitely doable, but if there is any weather (which would be fortunate if you are on a ski trip) or traffic, it can take a bit longer.

Definitely invest in an SUV as Denise suggested. In most but the heaviest snowstorms, you can get through the checkpoints with just M+S tires without putting chains on.

This year was a banner Winter up there. Whether next winter is a repeat is a crapshoot.

We have stayed at this resort and it is a great resort, only a 5-10 minute walk to a great beach on the lake and, as mentioned, a block away from a major grocery store (Safeway). It's clean and well-maintained. The drive to the Heavenly Gondola is about 5-10 minutes, but there is no free parking at the Gondola. You have to drive an additional 10 minutes or so to get to either the California or Nevada (Boulder or Stagecoach) lodges to get free parking. There is also no good public transport options from the resort to Heavenly, unfortunately, as the South Tahoe Heavenly shuttle does not go all the way to the resort.

I've skied Heavenly, North Star, and Squaw Valley. Heavenly is nice from Tahoe area. We were up at Kings Crossing off Tramway drive and had a beautiful view of the valley out towards southwest. (This was Kingsbury Crossing resort I think). The Ridge looks out that direction as well. I see Worldmark has a resort off Tramway drive as well.

Up on Tramway there is a shuttle bus every 30 minutes for either Heavenly or downtown Tahoe (Casinos).

Have not stayed at south shore.

BTW there is a nice snowmobile tour that departs near Zephyr Hills.
