Pacifica Grand - Zihuatanejo all inclusive

I'm looking at an RCI exchange here, but there's a mandatory AI. Normally there is no way that I would consider AI, but we really want to stay at this resort (views, location) and the AI fees aren't terrible. I have a few questions:

If I prepay the AI to get the 10% discount plus the extras - massages and resort credit, what happens if I have to cancel? I called Pacifica and I am not sure that the guy on the phone completely understood what I was asking. I certainly didn't follow his answer which seemed to be a yes/no answer that didn't make much sense.

He also told me that I had to purchase the AI on the same day that I confirm the exchange to get the discount. Really? Is this true? The RCI instructions only say that the AI is mandatory and has to be purchased prior to the beginning of the week to be eligible for the discounts.

Any other thoughts on Zihuatanejo would be appreciated. I fell in love with it on a cruise a few years ago and have been trying to get back ever since.

Never stayed at the Pacifica Grand, but love Ixtapa and have done RCI AI exchanges for friends to the Park Royal and also a different Pacifica and had to make sure we paid the AI 30 days prior to check-in and we always received the discount.

We love Puerto Vallarta but for the last two years have gone to Ixtapa and absolutely fell in love with it! We are going back again in the spring.

While I have no experience with this resort, I exchanged into one of the Pueblo Bonitos, and got near daily emails offering one 'today only' AI discount after another. Interestingly, the price didn't change much, but the deal never became unavailable. Then at the 'update' sales meeting, one of the perks for attending was several days' AI. I took cash, and wearing my TUG T-Shirt got us out of there pronto.
