Anybody stay here recently. We are booked in for New Year's, any suggestions on activities? We are planning some golf but are pretty much open for the week. Thanks.

We have never stayed at the Victorian we always stay at Silverleaf Seaside.

You might want to check out Moody Gardens here is a link to the site:

http://www.moodygardens.com/tickets/

They have a Festival of Lights set up for Christmas time thru New Year's. It could even take up to 2 days if you want to do all the things they have there. They have one day and two day passes and also individual tickets. Moody Gardens also has a Golf Course.

You can take the Ferry Boat ride over to the other side and back for free. We have done this several times and have seen dolphins in the water. It's a nice ride and if you take your car with you, you can drive around on the other side. Here is the link: http://www.crystalbeach.com/greer.htm

There is Pleasure Pier if you like amusement rides. Here is the link: http://www.pleasurepier.com/
Look for discount tickets.

You might want to check out Galveston Visitor Center online.

Here are a few more links I forgot:

The Grand Opry Theater: http://www.thegrand.com/
This is a Historic Theater that got flooded out during Hurricane IKE few years ago and has been restored. We have been couple times to their shows. There are a lot of Historic Homes to tour also. Should be able to get that info on the Visitors Site.

Be sure to check out the Galveston Tree Sculptures downtown. These were trees that were hit by Hurricane Ike and two sculpturers decided to carve them. Most of the trees are on private property owners paid them to do it. There is a list of addresses for this. Will see if I can find the link.

Here is the link: http://www.galveston.com/treesculpturetour/

The Visitors Center use to have a book on this with addresses not sure if they still have them.

If you drive towards Houston there is the Johnson Space Center. It is really not that far and you can tour the Center.

Avoid Galveston. Entire beach is filled with Seaweed and the city workers remove the seaweed from the water and pile it by the sea-wall (equivalent of concrete boardwalk in Northeast). The stench from rotting seaweed will make you sick in 10 minutes. The seaweed keeps coming. Beach is completely destroyed. Biking, running etc. on the seawall is impossible due to foul smell.

Yes, the seaweed is really bad this year in Galveston but OP is talking about being there for New Years and there are lots of other things to do and see in and around Galveston besides being on or in the water and in January it is too cold to be in the water anyways. I agree going to the beach there now during the summer is not a good idea.

Wow Hophop those are all great suggestions. I've lived in the same area as you for almost 25 years and own at Seaside but have never seen some of your suggestions. Will have to check them out on my next trip to Seaside. Thanks.
