DRI: The Point at Poipu, 3 deeded weeks, 1 of which is in The Club.
If you're staying in Waikiki, and don't have a rental car, you can get a shuttle that will drop you off and pick you up when you're done. Some include a drive past Iolani Place, Chinatown, and/or Punchbowl Crater. Most hotels have a tour desk where you can book them.

I always recommend the Home of the Brave tour. They take care of everything
And they have great stories about the history of the attack. Stories not
Everyone knows. They show clips of movies about the attack and they tell you
What was true and what wasn't. You don't need a tour to go to Pearl but this
Tour was one of my all time favorites.

We enjoyed the Home of the Brave Tour as well - it is a full day Military tour that visits many areas of the Island that were involved in the attack.

If you are a history buff you will enjoy it, but if not, it may be to much history/military. I wouldn't recommend it for children either.

We paid $7.50 for the Jamie Lee Curtis narrated audio tour which was very good. Combined with going through both the Road to War Museum and Attack Museum and watching all the video interviews with survivors, it is extremely thorough and absolutely awesome. Those survivor video vignettes must have been added within the last couple few years because they are in hi-def.

We are going to Oahu for a day in March. We'll be occupied in the morning, but would like to see Pearl Harbor before we fly back to Maui. Dh, dd and I have been before, but the other folks with us have not. I know the conventional wisdom is to get there as early as possible, but we can't do that. So, are we nuts to try to go later in the day? I had read somewhere here that you can get tickets ahead of time online. Does that guarantee you'll get in at a certain time, or just save the standing in line to get them?

I purchased my tickets online for $1.50 each for a specific guaranteed time slot. Just arrive an hour ahead of time and pick them up, no line. It closes at 5pm. We went at 130p and we ran out of time to thoroughly get through the museums. In retrospect, we should have taken the 1130a tour.

I bought tickets for the 11:00am tour on-line. Rented a car for $60 for the day. I'll post how it went tomorrow and if I would do it differently next time.

Thanks. We'll have to figure out our schedule and see if this will even work. We arrive in Honolulu at 10:30 a.m. and our flight back to Maui leaves at 4:30 p.m.. Don't know how long our first appointment will take and we'll want to get lunch somewhere along the way.

Today we left Th HHV at 9:00am via Charley's Taxi ($39.00 flat rate) and arrived at the Arizona Memorial at 9:25am. We picked up our tickets and did the 9:45am tour. It lasted until about 11:00am at which time we toured the exhibits at the Memorial. We rented the Audio Tour for $7.50 and it made everything more interesting. We were finished at noon and were not rushed. Called Charley's Taxi for the $39.00 ride back to Wakiki. Total cost for the 3 of us was $118.00. Total time from the HHV 3 1/2 hours door to door. You could do it faster or take more time depending on your preference.

Oh wow, you went through both museums in an hour and didn't feel rushed? I guess me and my wife are nerds then. We had about 2 hours and wished he had about 2 more.

Pearl Harbor visit

We planned our trip late and weren't able to get (free) tickets directly, the tour companies gobble a lot of them up. We chose to go through Discover Hawaii Tours; which also gave a tour through Honolulu neighborhoods and past the more prominent tourist sites in about 6 hours. We did this because our guest's focus was the USS Arizona, not all the other museums and ships. So it depends on your focus and time frame. Have a great time!

I've been twice, and I think I'd base my decision on whether to take an all-day tour with a company or DIY based on whether I had a car. With a car, I'd just visit the websites of both the AZ and the USS MO and book convenient times online as soon as I had my dates pinned down. Afterward, if you feel like it, you can visit Punchbowl Cemetery as well.

Also, if it's early in your vacation and you're coming from the mainland, remember that Hawaii is several hours behind us, so early tours are quite doable as you'll probably wake before dawn anyway. (If you have a 4:30pm flight, definitely book the earliest tour.)

If you book a tour of the Might Mo as well (might as well, as they share the same parking lot), allow several hours to Pearl Harbor, as you may want to linger at the memorial (it's very moving) and/or browse the grounds and bookstore/musuem. Often tours don't leave time for this and it's a shame because you need time to absorb it all.

I've found that behind-the-scenes tours are usually worth every dollar, so if you have an opportunity to book upgraded tours (e.g the Jamie Lee Curtis movie or a behind-the-scenes tour of the Might Mo), do it. You'll be the envy of the folks walking around trying to listen to the headset tour.

Now, on the other hand, if I didn't have a car, I'd probably opt to book with a tour company for sheer convenience as they usually offer pick-up/drop-off from hotels. Not renting a car can save you up to $100 a night (rental cost + hotel parking), so decide what sounds best to you and go with it.
