We were born and have lived in California all our lives and never tasted frozen custurd until being back East about 5 years ago. Now we search it out and can't get enough of it. Few and far between in Santa Clara County.
Until recently we didn't see any in California. When I asked about it I was told because the frozen custurd places don't want to compete with frozen yogurt. Why not, the custurd is great, can't say anything good for frozen yogurt.
How many on the West Coast never have tasted frozen custurd? How many have and love it? To me it taste like the smoothest/silkiest ice cream I have ever tasted.

I love the stuff and although its popularity had waned a bit, I see a resurgence here in New England again. I've used to have it at Paragon Park or Revere, but that's from a bygone era.

There are a couple places near me that feature it and there's a brand in some of the grocery stores.

I'd mail you some if it could travel.

Bingo ? Any help ?: http://frozencustardusa.com/ There's a "find by state " link and has California sites.

Abbotts is from the Rochester NY area. Maybe you can open a franchise in CA? :D

Culver's just opened in town. DW is a Wisconsin girl and was ecstatic. We are currently their furthest West outpost.

You can try this site. http://frozencustardusa.com/

We used to have a frozen custard shop in my neighborhood. We tried it once. It wasn't for me, but for my husband who likes really rich and very high fat desserts, it was good. The store went of out of business.

Culvers just opened across the river from me in fort Myers and has one under construction here in Cape Coral. lots of Wisconsin folks snowbird here and some are here full time. They love it. I haven't been yet

There used to be a lot of frozen custard in Washington, D.C. When I was a kid. Not so much any more

Near the sea.
Whats the difference between frozen custard and soft serve ice cream like Dairy Queen has? Nevermind, I read the link. DQ is probably chemicals.

Frozen custard is heavier, richer, and has more eggs. Have you ever had regular custard or flan? I am not fond of the eggy taste.

As custard is an ice cream, it must be at least 10% butterfat. What makes frozen custard unique is that by law it must contain 1.4% by weight of egg yolk, have a low overrun (amount of air out into the product), and be frozen and served fresh daily.

It seems to be exactly the same as the custard you buy in cartons to pour on desserts, only whipped and frozen.

I live in a suburb of Rochester and Abbott's Custard is my downfall - must be a local thing - it is more popular that regular soft ice-cream around here. But, having said that we are also home of the Garbage Plate - another local "delicacy"! It's a wonder everyone here isn't obese:D

I used to get it at AM/PM in San Diego. No idea if they still sell it.

If you are ever near Irvine California try Strickland's Custard - it is a franchise of a family owned custard stand that originated in Akron Ohio. It is homemade and people wait in long lines for it. Banana, Vanilla, & Black Raspberry are very good.

While Culvers isn't the best, if that is all you have access to, it will suffice.

In the DC area, there used to be a place on Rt 50 near Annandale Rd in Falls Church.

The best ever that I had in that area, was Carl's in Fredericksburg . . . and it's on the list of National Register of Historic Places.

YUMMY . . . in fact I think Carl's is better than Kopp's or Leon's . . . the best known here in the Milwaukee Area.
