We need a new snowblower. DH wants to buy one similar to what we have because it is easier to handle. This would be a Toro single stage with electric start.

I want a bigger one because I think we will have a crappy winter and am sick of how hard it is to snowblow through 2 or 3 feet of snow with a small snowblower. I like the Ariens 2 stage one. The downside is that it might be overkill for 5-6" and apparently it will leave a small layer behind because it has a metal auger instead of the rubber sweeper type.

Any experts want to weigh in? I appreciate the TUG point of view on just about everything. :)

I'm pretty sure this was discussed last year here so a search will help.

I would not buy a single stage blower if you expect more than an inch at a time. A decent double stage blower will give you a clean path. If your surface is not completely smooth it will leave a thin layer of snow when you lower the skids.

Spread a little calcium chloride and you'll be good to go.

I bought a Troy Bilt from Lowes seven years ago and love it. I "winterize" it every spring and run all the gas out as well as change the oil. No problems with it so far. I take that back, it was dripping a very little amount of oil last year so I took it in and for $50 it was gone over and is OK now.

I have a 700' drive with a turnaround big enough for six to eight cars and it takes me an hour to do about 4" of snow.

Mine is a 26" with a Tecumseh 8 1/2 HP engine. I think head lights are a wasted expense, if there's snow on the ground it's usually light enough to see.

The single stage blower will seem like a toy once you use a 2-stage machine.

Well, we found a solution. We are getting both. The good news is that we don't need Christmas presents now.
