We will be traveling to the Big Island for the first time in a little over a month. We have our timeshare week at the Bay Club but will be spending extra days on the Island. We are looking for Kona hotel recommendations since we will be getting in a day early and in the late evening.

You might also want to check into the hotels in the Waikoloa Resort area, the Marriott or Hilton Waikoloa. I'm familiar with Kona but I can't think of any hotels I'd particularly recommend. Since the airport is a bit north of Kona it wouldn't be that much farther to go up to Waikoloa. If you stay at the Hilton I think you can continue to use the pools for the day even after you've checked out.

Last March we stayed at the Courtyard King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel. It wasn't 5 star, but was nice enough for us. Being within walking distance to everything in Kailua-Kona was great!

The lagoon is great for swimming, snorkeling, and paddle-boarding:

Are you interested in a resort hotel or a cheaper place like a Courtyard? If it is the former, I suggest the Mauna Kea north of Waikoloa. It was the original of the super luxury resorts on the Big Island. It is now in Marriott's Autograph Collection and you can book it with Marriott Reward points.

I'd second the Mauna Kea, we had done the luau there, beautiful location. The Mauna Lani is another if you feel like splurging, we use the public access lot to visit the beach there, great snorkeling. There is a free hula show in the shops there. Its the next resort north of Waikoloa.

Thank you for some more ideas! We were thinking of cheaper places like the Courtyard, but since we have Marriott Rewards points, Mauna Kea might be an option too.

In case you didn't know, it takes 35,000 Marriott hotel points for a free night at the Courtyard.

I figured it was a lot, and probably not the best use of my points. Probably better to just pay for it and save the points.

Or use points at the Mauna Kea. A much better value proposition for your points.

Another vote for Courtyard, especially if your plane lands at night. It's closer to the airport than Waikoloa and convenient for exploring Kona before moving to the Bay Club. I've stayed there the first night the last two times I went to Kings Land and will do so again this fall.

Our plane does land at night and we check into the Bay Club the next day. Also, we are picking up another couple at the Kona Airport the next day.

I might have to visit the Mauna Kea the next time.

Appreciate the suggestions, TUGers! :)

In that case, the Courtyard is your best choice. Don't go to the Mauna Kea for just one night.

Hmmm...I'm a little concerned...we will be flying into Kona (first time on the Big Island!) arriving at 8:45 pm. We had planned on driving to the Bay Club that night...is it very far ? I know we will be tired, after flying from the East Coast (5 hour time difference) but was hoping to do it. We do want to get a rental car but I guess we could stay in Kona and get one the next day. Advice would be appreciated!

I don't think it's that far, about 19 miles or 25 minutes. We just happened to be coming in the night before (mainly to get a direct flight) and will be picking up another couple the next day. It's close enough to where I guess we could check in and then go back to the airport (depending on when the other couple is getting in).

No, it's not that far. And at night there won't be any traffic (believe it or not that highway can get backed up at times). It's 19 miles, 25 minutes per Google Maps. It could take you that long to get into Kona, depending on where your hotel is. Personally I wouldn't incur the extra cost of a hotel for that night.

Thanks all ! I'm sure we'll be tired, but my guess is we'll be so excited to be there that we'll be able to stay awake long enough to drive to the Bay Club :)

If you need to get excited, just look up at the sky. When you can see every detail of the Milky Way and the billions and billions of stars in the pitch black sky, it should keep you awake long enough to get to the resort. :)

Why not try airbnb.com there are a lot of one nite rentals for reasonable price and you meet local owners too.

I wonder how flexible this is for someone who is arriving late at night.
