I was contacted by Groupwise. For almost $2000 they offered to take my Mayan Palace timeshare off my hands. Is this a good idea? I really would like to get out of this timeshare, but that seems like a lot of money to give them something. I'm new to this. Comments?

Have you considered listing it for a dollar on ebay and offering a free closing? (total cost, under $500 including ebay fees) It's much cheaper than giving a company with a shady reputation a few thousand dollars. In many of these cases, the companies will take your money and have you sign a marketing agreement (a fancy agreement that lets them try to 'sell' the timeshare for you). When they don't get a buyer (they never do) you are out the money and you're still the owner of the timeshare, so you pay maintenance fees, etc.

Mayan Palace Transfer Fees

My wife and I rented a week at the Mayan Palace near Playa del Carmen and we loved the resort.
I saw a Tugger offering his week there for next to nothing. The reason I didn't buy it from him was a transfer fee of several thousand dollars, if I remember right.
You may want to check your contract and see what the transfer fee is before you try to sell.

Mayan Palace transfers always cause a ton of confusion.. I posted info on this in another forum. I've copied some of it here..

Ownership is transferred via an Assignment of Contract form. Currently, the process takes approx 30-45 days from when the notarized docs are sent to the resort.

The required transfer fee depends on the contract's original purchase date:

Contracts purchased before July 2001 will pay 1 current Maintenance fee as assignment fee.

Contracts purchased between August 1, 2001- November 5, 2005 will pay 10% of the total original purchase price (including equity).

Contracts purchased after November 5, 2005 will pay 5 times the current Maintenance fee.

The Vacation Fair (bonus weeks) usage also causes quite a bit of confusion.. This benefit will transfer on some of the older contracts, but newer contracts no longer allow the bonus weeks to transfer to your buyer.
