All,

I am off to WPORV in three weeks for my first trip to the property -- I'm very excited!!

I have a 1BR unit booked with SOs, and plan to call with a room assignment request. We like to be close to BBQs and to pools, can someone please make a recommendation? Thank you!

Best,

Greg

Hi Greg - They will not accept a specific request - they will accept a request for a building and a high or low floor - that's it.

You need to add your request to your reservation (you can do this online.)

Buildings 3, 6, and 7 are closest to the ocean and some have very nice views. We have had mixed luck on room assignments on both StarOption and Interval exchanges. I would ask to not be placed on the ground floor, but many people prefer those units.

The buildings closest to the pools and barbecues would be 3 and 5. You can ask at check-in for a specific building/unit, but not before. They may honor your request or not--it's totally up to them. If you get a nice check-in rep, they will look for something nice for you in their inventory; if you get a grumpy one, you will probably be out of luck. Before you sign the check-in docs, ask them to show you where the unit is located. We do this all the time--sometimes with good results and sometimes not. I also recommend to people to get there earlier in the day and walk around the property to see what location you prefer.

We were just there in April and our reservation was with StarOptions. Booked at midnight 8 months out. Did not request anything special. We were given a villa in building 3, 2nd floor overlooking the ocean and it was fabulous! Don't know why we were given such a spectacular view, but think it must be because of a timestamp on the reservation. However, the weather was pretty bad for 7 out of our 10 day stay, with rain and clouds almost all the time, so we ended up driving to the south shore where it was sunny and warm. Last 2 days were great. We did have trouble with housekeeping and only received a tidy on day 4, nothing else. Management later admitted they screwed up and we should have got a full cleaning on day 7 also. There are a lot of grills all around the resort and everything was very clean.

Nice spot Barb. Too bad about the weather - crap shoot.

For us, we usually prefer top floor, but at WPORV we much prefer the 1st floor. Rarely even used the hallways/exits. We have only stay in B7 HH section except for one studio stay in B6 (2nd floor HH also and quiet w/ good views, but had smokers below who apparently didn't care they were not suppose to be smoking - even though they were aware...).

Much prefer the 1Bd to the studio - the studio is cramped with Q bed (too use to K size), and very little counter space in the kitchenette - and I hear it is more limited in the newly built resorts even for the larger side (Nanea, WSJ CV-SB...).

We are okay with skipping Housekeeping - even we need anything (new towels, kitchen stuff) we seek out Housekeeping. Plus we bring our own fitted sheet (K-size - another reason to dislike the Q-size beds).

Thank you all, we put in a request for Building 3, 6 or 7 and will see what comes. Looking forward to the resort though!

Best,

Greg

Greg, good luck with your room assignment.

We are leaving KBC today after 5 days and headed to MKO. Today is the best day weather wise, so hopefully you get something like this. We did go to Princeville the other day and walked around the resort and saw a room. Very nicely done.

The pools are very nice with two smaller pools out by the cliff/ocean. The large pool in the center of the property is fantastic too.

Have a great time.

Mike

While we haven't measured, it seems that the studios on the ends on the floor of the HH are slightly larger.
Yes, these have Q beds. 2017 is our year.:)

Bldg 6 & 7 are IMHO the very best because they have OK -> unmatched views ( mostly really good) , they are the closest to the little pool at the ocean. It is a small pool but has the best views from the pool, hot tub and BBQ area. The pool by Bldg 3 & 2 is OK but has no views at all

The only downside of Bldg 6 & 7 is the parking is limited and a bit of a walk to the units.

The only bldg which I would not want is Bldg 1; all units are ground floor with one side looks at the parking lot the other side at heavy landscaping.

The parking there is kinda weird. Because of that they told us valet was free. Ask them if that is the case, and if so DO IT!

Can not for the life of me figure out why anyone would use the valet since you'd have to walk all the way to the main entrance to pickup your car from the valet vs just walking to your car.

According to the website, "Please note there is a nominal daily fee for valet and self parking at the resort."

My understanding, possibly incorrect, is that the parking and/or valet fees only apply to non-owners at the resort. Best to ask at the check-in desk.... I'm an owner there and I don't recall being charged a parking fee. Never used the valet, it's only 100 yards max from the front lobby to the parking deck and we've usually been able to park along the right side of the property unless you come back late at night.

We had no parking fee as exchangers the last two years. The first night was free valet park.

Is the room number entered in your confirmation the room you will be assigned, or is this a "place holder"?

All,

We are checked in here at WPORV and very happy with the room and property. We requested top floor, Building 3 (and also the other hammerhead building) and when we arrived, they told us we would be in 3/top floor.

But our room wasn't ready (there was a water leak). Around 5pm they offered to move us to another room that was ready now. At first I balked because liked the 3/top floor option (but on the side) but we are now in Building 5 in the hammerhead section on the second floor. We have a nice view of the ocean and I suspect this is the far superior view.

In any event, we are settled in now. I'm having a glass of wine and listening to Gordon Lightfoot, so life is good!

So sorry about the WKORV assessment - tough stuff being a distant owner.

Best,

Greg

I am not an owner at this resort and they told me there was no charge for valet service, so I used it.

All,

We leave tomorrow and have loved our time here at WPORV. This property amazes me -- it feels alot like Kings Land in the HGVC system. A terrific property that is underappreciated considering its intangible qualities.

Both properties are highly upgraded with good on-site amenities. Both offer great access to the island destination, and each island is a desirable destination.

However, both properties have a perceived "flaw", Princeville is wet and Waikoloa has heavy wind (and the Big Island itself is huge and hard to navigate). I recognize that my trip here is in the most dry period for Princeville -- which is a lucky break for me. The early morning and late afternoon rain has been a non factor, with very random, short bursts in the interim.

Neither "flaw" bothers me, and I find it interesting that these properties are accessible to me via an internal points system. I do wish this was a mandatory property, interesting decision by Starwood.

Thank you all for the advice and counsel about the trip!

Best,

Greg

Thanks for the detailed trip and property reports as usual!

I am inspired and a bit jealous by your frequent trips to Hawaii....i

Yes, thank you for the information. We are planning to go there next March. Is that considered the wet season?

Princeville is the "wet" end of the island. When it's too wet, drive south until you find a sunny beach.
