WLR- Hurricane Ida

The bottom / main pool is tolerable. It is definitely warmer than it was last year. I would guess that it is about about 1-2 degrees cooler than WKORV pool usually is.

The upper / slide pool is the one that is freezing cold. I have only seen a few people using that pool all week. Maybe they will start heating that pool once the resort fills up???

With that said, I agree with Jerseygirl and Ken that we will most likely not travel here in the winter months until they heat all the pools consistently.
When we first arrived, I thought the upper pool was decorative because no one was in it - then I saw the slide and volley ball net.
As W5* said, the lower pool is okay as long as the sun is out.
On one of our first days here, we came up from the beach (where the ocean water is warmer then the pool) and went into the hot tub by the #9 building - they have a thermometer in it - it was 94! A worker came along to check something and the 10 people in the pool asked him to raise it.

As far as the resort being full, DH and I were suprised at how many windows/units were lit at this time of year....we really do not see many rooms in the evening without lights on.

I just can't see anyone using the pools in Jan/February.

Okay, Greyfal and *5 have totally convinced me, to try for one of the Royals in Cancun if I'm not going in summer.

And if kids won't get in a pool because they think it's cold, well that says it all.

We're going to be at the Grand Mayan Riveria Maya week 52. A friend of mine who was there last year said that they do the opposite. The pool is apparently 3 tiers, with fountains in between. The highest tier (closest to the bar) was very comfortably heated ... the lowest one (closest to the beach) was very cold ... and the middle tier was somewhere in between (I believe she used the word "tolerable," which means I wouldn't go in). She said they didn't figure it out until the last day, when they heard a sales rep explaining it to a prospect. And they had spent the entire week closest to the beach . I am so glad she told me ... although, I have a feeling our group would have been found closer to the bar anyway! :D

Did he? When I was there it was explained to me that these whirlpools are not meant to be hot. It's not a hot tub like any at the other resorts (and frankly, I don't understand why they built anything other than a hot tub). There are no jets behind you, but rather in the middle oriented vertically up. I saw this type years ago at old resorts and thought they had gone out of style until my visit to Cancun.

Last year it was an excuse that they had "forgotten" to build a heating system (my guess is it was purposefully ignored in order to open on time). Now they're saving $$$ by not heating the pools so their guests/owners can enjoy it. I don't see any other Starwood resort doing this, so I can't understand why it happens. The management in Cancun must have other priorities, since I am certain lots of people complain about this. How can they have a pool with a slide where the water is too cold for children (and adults!) to enjoy? I just don't get this. It's almost like they want us to complain, not return, and spread bad reports like this to others. Don't they get it?

IT was HOT!

Yes, today when we went for our hot tub dip at 4 pm, the tub by building # 1 was HOT, yes, really HOT.

Everyone was very happy about this - so hot we had to get out and sit on the side after 10 minutes - luckily it was happy hour so my fellow tub mates were able to cool off :whoopie:

What happens in Cancun stays there, right

Yes, he did turn it up.
And there are jets behind you and also 'under you' - meaning on the bench seat you are sitting on. And there are no jets in the middle of the tub.

Seems with all the complaints they must have re-plumbed the tubs???

I went swimming in the ocean today, not the pool - so will have to have 5* report on this.

Final Update

What happens in Cancun stays there, right
I have a confession and as Pat already knows- I fought the swim up bar and the swim up bar won!

It was a great week. IDA was an interesting start to our vacation. The food and service seem to have gotten slightly better since last year. I once again enjoyed the Bimini Ring Game. I actually got 5 for 5 twice this week which is one of the reasons the swim up bar won (free tequila for 5 for 5). I was glad that the lower pool is now heated but the slide pool really should be as well. The hot tub was very hot yesterday so it appears that was fixed. I saw a large boat with some attachments yesterday that appeared to be sucking and pumping sand about 5 resorts to the north so hopefully it will get to WLR soon. For those iFans, they are opening an iStore at the Isla mall accross the street by years end. We went to Harry's twice this week for dinner and the food and service were excellent both times. We will be back in June and I look forward to winning the battle with the swim up bar at that time!

LOL! From someone who is leaving for Vegas on Tuesday, I can respect that!

But, they'll have to heat the pools before I'll ever go .... so maybe someone can take a picture for me. Pat ???????????????

Sounds like you had a great time -- I'm glad.

I think I took a picture yesterday - is it a specific one?
I am happy to take a picture as long as I don't have to actually go in the pool

Cool -- can't wait to see it! So, the pool situation requires a camera with good zoom capabilities, eh?!

Pool Temps

This is part of the response I received to a little blurb via MSC about the pool temperatures at WLR
We regret to inform you the Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resorts pool is not a heated pool. You may address a complain to ownerres@starwoodvo.com we will be more than happy to forward it to the appropriate department.
