I just received this from RCI.... Looks like renting from owners is the way to go....and avoid exchanging through RCI.

Thank you for your e-mail. Here is a piece of information I have cut
from a recent update that we have received.

1. The current one-in-four year rule has been changed to a
one-in-five-year rule that now applies to ALL Mayan resorts . This
means that exchange guests cannot return to any Mayan resort until the
fifth calendar year after their last travel date (example: if a member
traveled to a Mayan resort in 2006, they would be eligible to return to
any Mayan resort in 2011). This also includes Extra/Bonus weeks.

2. If a member owns at a Mayan resort, they cannot confirm into ANY
Mayan resort through RCI. This includes internal exchanges back to
their home resort. ALL Mayan members must contact Mayan direct to use
their internal exchange program. NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE!!

I hope this information is helpful, (may not so happy), but helpful.
When you are ready to travel, however, I would not hesitate to ask just
to make sure nothing has changed.

How is this helpful to those who own at MP? Seems like a huge disadvantage if you want to trade outside the group. Do you think this is a response to the mess up between MP and RCI this spring?

What stops anyone from making an exchange with SFX or other independent companies? SFX doesn't seem to have this rule. I don't know about the others. I still wonder why they have one set of rules with RCI and another set of rules with another company? Who is negotiating these rules anyway?

Yes, Sally should be very happy but also the people, who are trying to sell their timeshare resale at one of these resorts as they become more desirable. People will find out eventually that there are bargains for sale on the Internet so there will be more competion! :)

Why does the resort even care how often people exchange into their resorts?

More fresh meat for the sharks in the sales department.

Is it possible that these rules, (such as the 1 in 4 rule..), exist because they "Over Sell" the given capacity of the resorts? I have often wondered about that. Does anyone know what the reasoning is behind such a rule? This might also explain the practice of putting guest in the Sea Gardens that had exchanges for the Mayan Palace.

Mr. Smith...

What happens if a Mr. John Smith goes to the Mayan Palace in 2006? Does that mean that no other person named "John Smith" can go to a Mayan Palace until 2011?

What happens if a single woman goes to the Mayan Palace, and then gets married and changes her last name to her husband's name? Are they going to start to ask for marriage certificates and proof of identification to make reservations?

Or what happens if a woman doesn't go to the Mayan Palace, but then she gets married with a Mr. John Smith? Does this mean they cannot go to any Mayan Palace for their honeymoon?

Sally, maybe I missed it... Can you explain how this policy is good for members of The Gold of the Mexican Timeshare World? Maybe this will bring up the value of your membership if you want to sell it? Will this help you to rent your weeks at a profit by limiting demand, thus increasing exclusivity?

It seems like a brilliant marketing move... I will suggest it to the Royal Resorts. - Ellis

It is tracked by RCI account number not name. If you have 2 different RCI account numbers, you can go more often.

As many here like to poke.....

fun at sally, this recent developement,is just what I have been so matter of fact about.
Simple demand issue.
The mayan corporate heads have decreased the exchangers availability, because of the recent expierience with hurricane wilma.
People being downgraded, is just bad press.
This has made them look forward, and they can see the availability for (grand) units, will be thinner.
Although, they are a progressive resort...always constructing new resorts in the best places in latin america, this move was prudent.
I believe there will come a time when getting into a GRAND unit, will be rare for an exchanger.
So YES, this does add to the exclusive factor ,for GRAND unit owners.
Oh, and the sold out idea, so touted by many is just rubbish. The mayan chain is committed to an ever expanding menu of new (highest standard) resorts, coming on line.
This is why we purchased thier top unit.

As uneducated
as some here feel...

Once owned these: FirstFairway@Walden X 2; Lawai Beach; ManhattanClub; PuebloBonitoRose; 4 South Africa--now timeshare-free
I'm locking this thread before it gets any more personal. Both sides of the issue have weighed in and I think now would be a good time to stop.

As a friendly reminder, please stick to the questions asked without the personal remarks.
