Thanks in advance! What a great site! I own nothing yet and I am interested in renting but don't have a clue as to how this works. Could someone explain the process for renting a week or a night. I would like to know how it works from; contacting someone offering a week for rent on this site to checking in at the resort. thanks
Some of the savvier TUG folks recommend going with airtight signed timeshare rental agreements & I don't know what-all. We don't bother with any formalities -- well, hardly any. Then again, maybe we're just living in fool's paradise & asking for trouble, I don't know.
However that may be, we rent out our timeshare(s) by putting nice ads on Craig's List & 1 other Internet spot whose name doesn't come to mind right now, but lots of TUG folks use it. (Not RedWeek-Dot-Com -- but a free 1.)
When somebody responds & agrees to take it at our price, we tell'm we need the money by a specified date so that we will have time to cancel the floating-week reservation if the renter backs out. (That has not happened so far.) When we get the money, we E-Mail the resort saying that our renter will be checking in instead of us. We print out the E-Mail message & send that by FAX & USPS to the timeshare -- suspenders & a belt. Then we send it by USPS also to the renters. Plus, we phone the timeshare resort. We also send the original reservation slip to the renters via USPS.
This last time, we got back a nice E-Mail from the timeshare reservation folks saying that the name on our reservation had been changed to our renter's name, so everybody is good to go. All our renters need to do is show up & check in. If they're smart, they'll take all that paperwork with them, just in case. We kept a photocopy of the reservation slip, also just in case.
The idea is that by renting out our timeshare(s), we'll cover all our yearly timeshare fees, plus a little something over that. Then, we use the "little something" to get outstanding Last Call & Instant Exchange timeshare reservations for our own vacations. That way, our vacation accommodations cost us next to nothing, or at most work out to approximately Motel 6 & Super 8 rates for staying in luxury timeshare vacation resorts.
Not only that, The Chief Of Staff seems to enjoy the wheeling & dealing aspects of all this. She gets The Old Man to do all the computer & Internet stuff associated with it. So it goes.

I require a $100 Paypal deposit to put the TS in the renter's name.
I have the resort sends renter (and me) a confirmation in the renter's name.
The balance owed is due within 24 hrs. of receiving the confirmation - also Paypal.
No cancellations, no refunds.
I went the notarized contract route once, but a contract is only as good as the word of the person who signs it, and most people seem to be happy with a confirmation directly from the resort. I guess a contract allows you to sue the person if they default, but I am sure the cost of a lawsuit would be far more than the cost of the rental.
Is the original poster wanting information on how to rent a week or day or whatever from someone or how to rent out a week when he owns a week?
If you're looking to rent a timeshare from someone, you can look at the classifieds here on TUG or there are other sites that primarily are meant for people who want to rent or buy weeks.
