I called HGVC today because they needed to fix some points that didn't transfer from the old website to the new website. While I had them on the phone I asked about the Maui property. They told me that the project has stalled and it wasn't looking good for 2017 opening. They aren't booking reservations for owners and he hasn't seen any contracts sold yet either. He also told me that they have sold units at the new Grand Islander and the new property in Hilton Head and are taking owner reservations for both places.

Has anybody heard anything else about Maui? I was so excited for this place to open! I guess I'll have to wait another year or two.:wall:

This really, and unfortunately, doesn't surprise me. Maui appears to me to be one of those places that's difficult to do business with the local government. Even with announcements of new builds or locations I've learned to take a wait and see attitude.

I was kind of toying with the idea of buying into HGVC specifically for access to the Maui location. If that's on hold, I'll probably skip until the plans firm up.

The labor force is another factor, 80% of the population lives on Oahu. I'm at HHV this week construction workers are on 6 day workweek (7am-4pm) for the new Islander tower. I've been watching the come and go from the area, they park in the marina lot.

I've been on interisland flights that were loaded with workers, one I inquired and they were building a power plant near Kona. It must be difficult to manage a skilled labor force on the outer islands when there are plenty of jobs here on Oahu.

If that is your main reason for buying into HGVC, i think waiting is really good idea.. Not only could things continue to be delayed, but i don't believe they have announced the point requirements yet..

Hi Dave
I took this picture last December, from close to Starbucks.
Would be nice if you can take another picture from roughly the same angle so that we can see the progress made in about 5 months time...

Aloha

Use Grand Islander crew in Maui

This team built the Grand Islander in good time. Now, HGVC needs to use these same contractors to build the TS in Maui. Maybe it's more cost effective to move the same people from one project to another instead of bringing in a whole new crew?

With that said, HGVC should have already started the demo and ground work. I guess there is more red tape in Maui than HGVC anticipated.

Doesn't surprise me. Some friends of ours live in Hawaii (the big island) and there's 2 factors that come mainly into play:

a) "Island time". Instead of a 7.5 hour work day (unionized) the "island" time day may be 3-4 hours/day.

b) For a variety of reasons, the Hawaiian populace is very adverse to building new developments, etc. Projects will be approved and then someone starts a protest, greases some palms, and then new regulations/etc. come into play and either kill the project midway through or dramatically increase the cost/timeline.

I will be very amazed if the project is done prior to June 30th 2017. Reality is probably closer to 2018 sometime, IMO.

But I would be happy to be wrong and have it done sooner.

:)
