Have not stayed there but in-laws have been. They go to Tortola every year in January-February. It is apparently a very well done resort and very high end. I was told that it was being sold as condo/villas, not as time share- don't know how they will reconcile some privately owned rooms with some owned by Marriott. I guess it has gone into receiver-ship so Marriott has swooped in and bought at a discount- I presume that they will take over unsold villas/condos and do management (for a fee $$$ for the ones already sold). It's very expensive to build down there and there are lots of rules and regs from the local governments that make things difficult (this is BVI's not US). Was built very quickly and timed exactly wrong for the economic down-turn.

Great! So when we go back to the BVI for our next Tradewinds family cruise, we will have a nice place to stay afterwards ( or Before!) and can maybe use some points for our accommodations!

Love the BVI!

I doubt that Marriott bought anything. I don't think they own any of the Autograph Collection. They don't even own many of the hotels and resorts that carry the Marriott name on them.

Correct.

From the Marriott website: "The Autograph Collection, Marriott International’s fastest growing brand, announced today that the Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina, in the British Virgin Islands, will join the Collection in early 2012, under a franchise agreement with Scrub Island Development Group Ltd."

Marriott did not buy Scrub Island Resort and Spa - they merely entered into a franchise agreement with the owner (Scrub Island Development Group Ltd).

I stayed twice this year at the Orlando hotel in this chain and it was wonderful and totally different from the marriott norm. Highly recommend it but don't have any experience with the one the OP asked about.

Btw...the concierge room is open on weekends, a real treat for a Marriott.

gblotter,

Your link is interesting. This makes more sense now. Marriott is just affiliating with the resort. I wonder if they will take on management too? My in-laws were quite impressed with it and they recommended the place to us. It is a group of condos/villas that are privately owned and rented out/managed by the resort. The place was still actively in sales when they were there but it was not cheap. It'll be interesting to see if they will take MRP's- what value would that be to an owner of a condo down there? As I said above I don't quite see how they will fit this in with the Marriott model.

There are other independent hotels in the Autograph Collection that are available through marriott.com for cash or Marriott Rewards Points. The Mansion on Forsyth Park in Savannah and the Algonquin Hotel in New York City are two that are on our "someday" list. I'm hoping that eventually at least some of the "collection" hotels with which Marriott has affiliated will be available using DC Points as well, the way some of the Ritz Carlton Residences are now.

{eta} They seem to be adding hotels to this collection on a fairly frequent basis, and a notice is put on news.marriott.com as each one is added. (I figured I'd add the link just in case anyone else likes to watch for this stuff.)
