I asked the same question in the Mexico forum...

What, if any, value is there trading through Interval Intl into certain timeshare properties in the Dominican Republic and Jamaica if you have to purchase the all inclusive package anyway and the cost then becomes the same as if you booked the resort through the property itself or a travel agent?

One of the reasons I purchased a Marriott TS (have both points and a week which I can either convert to more points, use as is, trade into intervalmintl or get Marriott rewards points) was not only to use the Marriott properties but to be able to trade into higher quality resorts at a cost of no more than an exchange fee in areas Marriott does not have a vacation club property such as The DR and Jamaica and other Caribbean destinations.

Would appreciate any feedback as perhaps I am missing something as it seems like using the interval trade and then having to "purchase" the AI misses the whole point of TS.

From the searches I had done, going AI is always cheaper booking from sites like Expedia or booking.com, or even the hotel/resort websites. In the Dominican Republic I can recommend Royalton and Hard Rock Hotel Punta Cana, both AI and very good. September is the low season/low prices in Dominican Republic.

Yes, but that is not the question. I am looking for high-end (Marriott level or better) resorts in Jamaica and DR where you do NOT have to go AI. I agree that using a timeshare trade into an All-inclusive (where there is a mandatory AI purchase) is a waste of the trade as you are spending the same money whether or not you are using a timeshare trade.

The question/topic is that I want to be able to use a trade into a luxury/high-end timeshare property through interval where either the cost of AI is significantly less than if I purchased the same trip through the resort directly or on a travel agent OR if there is no AI requirement.

Ok, at least in DR, punta cana, I think almost all hotels are AI, because there aren't good places to eat, no good (sanitary safe) restaurants, just fast food, pizza. I think there isn't too much to do outside the hotels, two small malls, some supermarkets. I'd been there several times, and I always do AI or rent airbnb condos and cook. The area is far from being developed, from a tourist perspective. But the hotels and beaches are very good.

A few in S and VA, a single resort in NC, MD, PA, and UT, plus Jamaica and the Bahamas
The only high end non AI property that I know of in Jamaica is
Great House Villas At The Half Moon Club #0914. It exchanges through RCI and it is super rare to ever see a unit on deposit.

II and RCI aren't missing the point, its just that the higher end companies aren't building non AI timeshares on these islands. If you want a nice non AI experience on these islands you need to stay in the high end hotels and if you eat in high end restaurants (again you will only find these in high end hotels), you are likely to pay as much if not more than you would have paid if you booked a package deal into a high end AI.

How can one determine the cost of the all inclusive add on through Interval so as to determine whether it's less expensive to trade in with Interval and just purchase the add-on AI or just book the stay at the all inclusive property through a travel agent and forego the trade?

Perhaps during certain times of year it's more beneficial (financially) to trade in and add-on the AI and at other times more beneficial (financially) just to book the stay at the all inclusive property through a travel agent and forego the trade?

Just click through the II exchange (or getaway) process as though you're going to book the week, and it will show you the AI cost for the resort. You won't actually be buying it until you enter a credit card, so no worries that you'd accidentally make the purchase.
