Just got this e-mail:

Dear Owner,

Today we’re pleased to announce the highly anticipated opening of The Westin Nanea Ocean Villas, our newest Westin Vacation Club resort on Maui. Located oceanfront on 16 acres of North Kā‘anapali Beach and next to a 10-acre public park, the resort is in close proximity to The Westin Kā‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas North.

Voted the “Best Island” by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler for more than 20 years, Maui has become a coveted destination for those seeking to experience the special spirit of aloha. To ensure Owners have the ability to enjoy all that this award-winning island has to offer, we sought to provide even more villa accommodations on Maui’s famed Kā‘anapali Beach. Today there are 190 one-, two- and three-bedroom villas available, with 200 more villas expected to be complete in early 2018. The Westin Nanea Ocean Villas is the latest addition to our oceanfront complex of upper-upscale resorts which will offer a total of more than 1,400 stylish villas on the island.

Under the careful guidance of the resort’s cultural director, the essence of Hawai‘i has been thoughtfully woven into design elements throughout the property. With the symbolism of the hīna‘i (fish basket) at its center, the resort celebrates the history of the land and the gathering of stories — both past and present. Owners will also enjoy many island-inspired programs and distinctive Hawaiian experiences. The Pu‘uhonua o Nanea Cultural Center offers innovative and educational programs that honor local history, language, art, crafts, music and dance. Even the resort’s name nanea, which means relaxation in Hawaiian, speaks to the comfortable and authentic setting.

The world-class amenities at The Westin Nanea Ocean Villas include an expansive lagoon-style swimming pool, children’s beach pool and play area, oceanfront cabanas and a WestinWORKOUT Fitness Studio. Mauka Makai (mauka: toward the mountains; makai: toward the ocean), the resort’s full-service restaurant, is farm-to-table utilizing indigenous plants and vegetables grown on-site and from local farms. The Inu (drink) Pool Bar is a relaxing setting to enjoy oceanfront views, refreshing cocktails and a light menu. Owners can also take advantage of unlimited access to resort amenities at The Westin Kā‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas and The Westin Kā‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas North located next door, including Spa Helani, a Heavenly Spa by Westin.

The Westin Nanea Ocean Villas is the newest addition to the Vistana Signature Network and the perfect complement to our family of resorts in Hawai‘i. Rental reservations are being accepted now with first Owner occupancy in June 2017.

We invite you to learn more and hope to see you on vacation soon.

Sincerely,

We got a week through II at a 2 bedroom unit from this coming Friday.

We have been to other resorts near Ka'anapali Beach, including one of the Marriott resorts, and the Diamond Resorts.

This time we may not rent a car. What is the taxi rate? Are there airporter shuttles to the resort.

I understand that there are regular shuttles to the other 2 sister resorts?

Are there complimentary shuttles to Whaler's village? Lahaina - including the mall with the Safeway (I guess the main luau is next to that mall?)? Downtown Lahaina?

The two other timeshare resorts (Westin Ka'anapali and Westin Ka'anapali North) are a block away on the beach path - no shuttle needed.

There is also a shuttle to the Westin Hotel and Sheraton Hotel - which are both near Whaler's Village.

There are several different luaus. One of the most popular, the Old Lahaina Luau is on front street in Lahaina - not by the mall. The mall is between the resort and Lahaina - right on the highway.

The airport is on the other side of the island, so the round trip cost of a shuttle will be the equivalent of renting a car for several days - I'd rent a car.

The shuttle does run to Lahaina. One of the stops is at Safeway which is near the Old Lahaina Luau. There are 2 other stops, one at the outlet mall and another farther down Front Street.

We are currently still at wkorv and this week shuttles have been going up to Nanea to pick up guests. The shuttle line will incorporate Nanea guests. And will stop at the Villas, Sheraton, Westin Maui resort and spa, outlets, Lahaina cannery mall, and Lahaina wharf cinema.

We still rented a car since it gives us the freedom to explore the island. :)

Definitely the way to go! As nice as the resorts are, there is still much more to see.

I can't imagine going to Maui, or any other Hawaiian island, without renting a car. So much to see and experience!

This is an excellent comment, even for the frugal minded!

If you want to try to save a little, there are two car rental offices directly across the street from the timeshares and they have daily rentals

Question 1.

If we really want to be adventurous and frugal, can we go on a island bus between the OGG airport and the resort?

If the answer is yes, where do get that bus at both the airport and at the resort? What is the bus number going from OGG to the resort, and the bus number for the return trip? How long does it take between the airport and the resort on this bus? What is the fare on this bus? Does one need exact fare?

Question 2.

If we want to take a more economical way than a taxi (but not the shuttle mentioned in the above link), can one take uber (or another ride-sharing service)? What might be the uber rate?

Seriously, rent a car. We have stayed at WKORV/WKORVN over a dozen times. A car will actually save you money. The round trip shuttle for two between the airport and WKORV or Nanea will cost you nearly as much as a car rental for a week.

Stop at Costco on the way (Costco is near the airport). What you will save by shopping there is enormous -- even compared to shopping at the Safeway in Lahaina. You will make up the the remainder of the car rental cost by saving on groceries. And a car is useful on Maui, even if you don't use it every day.

Everything is expensive in Hawaii, especially food. But for whatever reason, rental cars by the week are relatively cheap (shopping car rentals for the best price is another topic entirely).
