Hello everyone. First time poster here.

We have been happily enjoying our Shell Vacations ownership since 2002. We have a relatively low amount of points split between the Arizona club and Hawaii club. We are by no means experts and have probably not used our points to their full potential, but we've been on many great vacations throughout the years and have enjoyed every one of them.

We are currently out on the Big Island in Hawaii and went to an owner's update (read: sales pitch to buy more points) and have learned that we are not able to access any of the benefits to the Wyndham merge because we haven't upgraded our membership (i.e. buy more points).

I've noticed that you can get "free points" out there and was wondering if we were to get some off of the resale market would we be granted access to the Wyndham benefits? The salesperson said "no," but wondering if that was completely accurate? The points available through the developer are sooo expensive.

Thanks!

Did you buy your Shell points from Shell or did you get them GIFTED/inherited from a direct family member (parent, grandparent)? Those points can be used to access Wyndham resorts. Not a lot of inventory or dates.

Do not listen to any timeshare sales people. This is not the old Shell where the owner's updates were more low key. I know, I own Wyndham points for years and several years ago, collected some Shell points as my siblings now live on the West Coast ... and I owned Shell points before being acquired by Wyndham.

Wyndham points acquired on the resale market can not access Shell resorts. You can use them to book at Wyndham Vacation Resorts plus RCI is your exchange company.

Thanks for the reply. We bought our initial points (AZ) through the developer and then bought more HI points on our first vacation back in 2002 when we saw how wonderful the resort was. There was no pressure back then and we looked at it as "vacation insurance."

So, if I were to acquire more Shell Points, we can use them for the Wyndham resorts? Is the only benefit of purchasing through the developer more reservation lead time, or what? We would really like to get some more points so that we can travel more often, use the points for airfare, etc, but don't want to get a bunch of points with associated MFs only to learn that we can only use the points at the Shell properties.

Another note... we tried to book a room at a Wyndham property in San Antonio, and the number of points required were crazy high (more than a week in HI at our home club). The salesperson said that was because we weren't "part of Wyndham" and if we bought more points that wouldn't be the case????

I believe that she'll owners can get into club Wyndham resorts the same way club Wyndham owners can get into shell resorts. There is an affiliate agreement between the clubs so that a little of each club is made available to the other

And buying more shell points won't open up more Wyndham to you

I'm guessing that they were trying to sell you a club Wyndham membership just like if I was to visit a shell property they would try to sell me a shell membership

there is an exchange agreement between Wyndham and Worldmark whereby Wyndham owners can reserve Worldmark resorts and vice versa. This agreement is not available to resale owners. Word is that shell will be brought into this agreement at some point.

As you brought your current Shell points directly from Shell .. those should be able to book Wyndham. If you buy resale Shell points now, those points 'might' be coded Shell only usage.

You could post an offer to do a private trade of a week at Shell for a week at a Wyndham resort.

Is there a way to find out if they "might or might not be' coded only as Shell? Not looking to trade...looking to buy more.

Unfortunately, there is no way to know whether Shell will consider resale points eligible for any crossover benefits. I would wait and see what happens with your points and ignore every sales pitch. You have already paid far too much. If you want Wyndham, you should buy Wyndham. It's a great program and can be purchased resale for pennies on the dollar.
