Are HGVC resorts really that strict on owner being present for check in for an open season reservation? Was looking at booking a trip out west but that policy concerns me. If owner runs into flight delays and other family members arrive early do they really not allow them to check in until owner arrives? If so I would be really concerned about booking a trip and meeting family members there. If I were delayed and didn't arrive till the next day that would be pretty bad to have family members find another place to stay overnight and losing a night waiting until I arrive.

Perhaps they'd let 'em sleep by the pool.
"No guest confirmations are permitted for Open Season rental reservations." - The Rules.

Could another family member masquerade as yourself?
Perhaps they could legally change their names to yours... Then your DL's would match.

If your guests are traveling separately then there is a risk.

If you're really concerned about a possible delay in your arrival, you could have your guests arrive one day later to play it safe. Or you can explain the potential risk to your guests so they understand that if you're delayed they may need to find accommodations for the night.

You could also make a Club Reservation (instead of an Open Season Reservation). For Club reservations, I've called the front desk to allow family members to check in before I arrive. They just required that I stop by the front desk when I arrive to avoid a guest certificate charge.

I have only done Open Season reservations at Valdoro (Breckenridge), and they validate my identity every time at check in.

They want the owners ID and a credit card to swipe.

If an owner knew they might be late, or will be, I assume that a Guest Certificate could be purchased, but then the Guest would have to provide their credit card at check-in. But if the owner does show up on time, don't use the GC: call it insurance.

Guest Certificates are not available for Open Season reservations per Club rules, which is what the OP has.

Well, kills that idea.

... I suggested one of the OP's guests legally change their name to his.

It'd be like from the Newhart show: Larry, Darryl, and Darryl.

--A Loophole *IF (and only if) your HGVC week is owned by a Trust--

I've already sold my HGVC week last summer but last Christmas I was in the same boat of questions as you are. After booking an open season 5-night stay in GW/Waikiki for my boss (and losing sleep that very night), I called HGVC the following AM and was told that, since my week is owned by my living trust and I am the trustee, I can pretty much designate a third party to check-in on my behalf. They did change the name on the confirmation which I had to print for my boss' use during check-in but I didn't have to be around when he did check-in. Boss said, they were assigned a 2BR on 30th floor Ewa side. He saved a lot but still, no promotion for me although that is not his (nor my) fault :)
