I'm an owner at Ocean Key in Virginia Beach. I previously was an owner of two units at Greensprings Plantation in Williamsburg, VA. Greensprings allowed me to just give them back the units. I called Ocean Key and was told I can only relinquish it to them if I pay five (5!) years of maintenance fees! This is absurd- I have to PAY them to take it so they can resell it!!!! Any thoughts, advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If this is a PRIME week .. like July 4th ... you could most likely sell it ... and so could the resort. Then that fee would be absurd.

If you own ANYTHING less that a PRIME WEEK (basicly the month of July), the resort will be hard pressed to transfer it to someone WHO MIGHT pay the MFs. Collecting 5 years of MFs in advance, is not just 5 years of the fees being covered, but if some days of your week get rented and interest acruring on that money ... might get the resort MFs paid for 10 years. And if they have a broker .. or a resale program, it would help to pay a commission and advertising costs to sell the YOUR UNWANTED week.

You want it gone ... pay the money to the HOA. If you want to be cheap ... you will still be paying the MFs. Else find another (LEGAL) way to transfer the ownership out of your name.

I own a prime week (2nd week in August). I'm new here so I'm not sure what you mean by paying it to HOA.

HOA=home owners association.
What the previous person means is, if you want your timeshare gone, pay the $ to the Ocean Key HOA. The week you have (2nd week of august) should be easy to get rid of in the bargain deals section of this website.

I would say when someone wants to charge me exorbitantly for something I can do myself, I either fins someone else to do it or do it myself.

In this case, you could probably get rid of this on the bargain deals section in a short time.
