We'll be staying in Newport, this September, at the Wyndham Inn Long Wharf.

We're interested in taking a day trip , to Boston, and maybe Salem.

Any tips, suggestion, etc., on a day trip, or anything concerning Newport, would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Expect about a two-hour drive allowing for traffic each way from Newport to Boston. Maybe book a hotel for one night if you're going?

Boston is a city of neighborhoods. You'll need to choose whatever time allows--Little Italy (Hanover Street), Boston Harbor (Atlantic Ave), Back Bay (Newbury Street and Copley Square), Boston Common/Public Garden, Beacon Hill (Charles Street), Fenway/Museum of Fine Arts, and across the river, Harvard Square in Cambridge.

Frankly, I'd skip Salem entirely. It's a real snooze and not a good use of your limited time if you only have a day in the Boston area.
I have family that lived in abutting Beverly and I never understood the attraction of Salem at all --- unless you're a "witch" or a "witch history" buff of some sort.

I'm assuming good mobility and a willingness to walk around in offering the following itinerary ideas and suggestions:

You could get an early start and drive into Boston, parking (not free, but affordable) in the Boston Common Parking Garage for the day. From there, you could easily walk to the North End, through Fanueil Hall and its' Marketplace, see the new "Eataly" operation in the Prudential Building on Boylston Street, walk around the Boston Public Gardens. If interested, you could easily take the subway to the Museum of Science from Park Street station. You could drive back to Newport at the end of that day, having seen quite a bit of what's interesting in inner Boston without joining the absolute insanity of trying to drive within the city --- truly a fool's errand. However, if you did this, your departure heading back south had better not be on a Friday (Cape Cod bound traffic), nor between about 3-6 p.m. on any weekday --- lots of commuter traffic.

Just some thoughts, if they help. Do skip Salem entirely though; it's really and truly just a whole lotta nuthin' at all, at least IMnsHO.

Perfect time to be in Newport! Great location also in the center of town. You will be able to walk to just about everything. Just a couple of random thoughts....

1. Spend an evening in Providence. (I prefer it over Boston for a night out)
2. If you are into cars - there is a small but nice automobile museum in Newport
3. If you are into military ships - check out Battleship Cove in Fall River MA (only about 25 minutes away)
4. There are two really good food tours in Newport - try one or both!
5. If gambling is of any interest - day trip to Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun in CT is less than an hour away.
6. Same area - Mystic CT has lots to offer for a day trip

Also, you can catch a train or bus from Providence into Boston if you wish.

The Salem Trolley is the best way to see Salem

The eight mile ride around the city takes you past the Charter Street Burial Ground, the House of the Seven Gables, Witch Dungeon Museum, Salem Witch Museum, the historic waterfront area and other locations, including Chestnut Street considered to be one of the most beautiful streets in America.

When in Boston I would suggest a Duck Tour. They are great fun, and a fantastic way to see the city by land and Charles River. Make sure to get to Quincy Market. It is really the heart of the tourist district. Lots of street performers there, and very close to the old State House where the Boston Massacre happened. It's a little museum too, as well as the entrance to the subway station. If you have time, walk the Freedom Trail past many historic sites. Top of the Prudential Center has a great panorama of the city. There are also ferries to certain islands. The one I recommend would be George's Island where the "Lady in Black" haunts the tourable Fort Warren. Very fun place to explore. There is a great theatre district in the city. Blue Man Group is very popular and has a regular show there. You can buy very discounted day of tickets to many shows at one of the BOSTIX windows in Quincy Market or in front of Trinity Church in the Back Bay.
If there during September, see the Red Sox Play at Fenway park, which really is a living museum. If they are not in the World Series and games are still happening, then tickets should be fairly reasonable. If you don't want to see them, but are interested in the park you can take a tour. Sam Adams and Harpoon are also in town and both offer tours of their breweries.

Anyway, there is just so much stuff to do in Boston, you could spend a week there easily so choose wisely with your time. :)
