New passport needed for a name change when married?

We are making honeymoon plans for my DS & his finance. They will be flying to Aruba, about 3 months after the actual wedding. Her passport has her maiden name, but she intends to take his last name. She will have an updated military ID with her new name. Does she need to have a new passport issued?

Maybe it would be easier to book the flight in her maiden name?

I think she should get a new Passport. She can have all the paperwork ready and mail it in right after the Wedding. Or she can wait to change all of he ID until after they get back. There is Social Security, Driver's License, and as you noted her Military ID.

I've never been asked for another form of ID confirming the name on the passport... they just match the name to the boarding pass and the picture to my face.

With that said... passport renewals lately have taken weeks, not months. So if she sends it right after the wedding, she should have it on time assuming no glitches!

Thanks for your replies. I've sent her the link to the State Dept. info (thanks Jim). She will have time to get a new passport, so I'll suggest she book the flights in her married name and then submit the her passport for a name change right after the marriage. That should work!
