Hi all - we have been many times in whale season and also in September for the marathon but never when kids are out of school. We are taking our nephew for his high school graduation so will be there first week of June. What differences can we expect? Anything we need to know? Also - best place for him to learn to surf???

We too will be going to Maui this Summer for the first time. But for us it's first time to Hawaii. We are going the first week of August.

We usually do whale season / spring break. Last summer we did July and I was surprised at how crowded it was. Definitely make reservations in advance. Our kids wanted to zip line it was booked on the days we had free.

We have used Surf Dog Maui for surfing. He got the kids up on the first session and they went back another day during our stay they liked it so much.

During summer we've found that air conditioning is a must, especially if you are staying on the Big Island in Kona.

First week of June may not be as crowded as it will get later in the summer. Which island(s) are you looking at?

We went in the summer in 2005, 2008, and 2011 due to school calendars. The weather will a tad warmer than whale season, but there isn't that much variation from winter to summer in Hawaii. It might also be a little more humid in the summer. But other than that, the main difference is the lack of whales! The surf is usually more benign in the summer as well, particularly on north-facing beaches, except some of the south-facing beaches can have a little more surf at times in the summer.

Because the whales are gone, the whale watching boats revert to snorkel cruises and the parasail operators kick back into gear when the whales leave. If your nephew wants to parasail, summer is the time to do that.

We haven't been since 2011 since once our kids hit high school and college, even summers became busy with jobs, study abroad, internships, etc. My wife and I hope to return as empty nesters during whale season in 2019 or 2020.

HVC: The Point at Poipu, 3 deeded weeks, 1 of which is in The Club.
We've gone in the winter many times, but last August was our first trip in the summer. Weather wasn't too much different, except the days being longer. The biggest difference I noticed was seeing flowers that I hadn't seen blooming before. Also noticed more families with kids, which wasn't really a surprise.
