HI there,

We are looking at staying at the Hyatt for Thanksgiving next year. However, we were at WKORV last Spring and my kids didn't like the rocky coral right outside the resort because it made it harder to walk out to the waves to boogie board. Is the beach more sandy in South Kaanapali such as the Hyatt Residence Club?

Thank you! Kath

Beach is poor in front of the Hyatt/Residence Club (thin from shoreline back, gray sand, and as I remember...some sizeable rocky areas in the water ). I have never been a boogie boarder, but I don't think there are generally any desirable waves for such activity at the Hyatt.

HOWEVER, a 5-8 minute walk north up the beach...past the neighboring Marriott complex...and in front of the Kaanapali Alii, there should be good waves. At the Alii, a point of land juts out, with two waves coming from two slightly different directions...and at least one of them should be good for boogies. This is a wide beach area, where there are usually surfboard instruction classes going on all day long. [I believe there are usually lots of different board activities there, such as boogie and longboards.] The beach, in front of the Alii is generally thinner during the summer, but by Thanksgiving each year usually gets MUCH deeper and draws lots of sunbathers...and WAY MORE than would ever be interested in sitting out in front of the drab/small Hyatt shoreline. Also, the sandy beach in front of the Alii extends quite a ways from there and to the North (towards the Westin and far beyond).

I expect that there will also be comments from the tons of timesharers who stay at the Marriott...right next door to the Kaanapali Alii. There should be lots of persons with families and boogie board experience at this part of the beach.

There is one narrow area of sand in front of the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa that continues out into the ocean. Other than that, it can be quite rocky. Also, if front of the Marriott Maui Ocean Club Lahaina Villas and the main resort it can be quite rocky past the water line. There is more sand in the water in front of the Napili Villas. Look at Google Earth or Google Maps and you can zoom in and see the sand. The best sand is to walk north towards Black Rock. When you get to the Westin Maui Resort, there is some nice sand there. Continue closer to Black Rock and there is plenty of sand that continues out into the ocean.

In front of the Marriott's Napili Villas is a small kiosk of the Ka'anapali Surf Club where they give surfing and bodysurfing lessons too as you can see in this movie clip here. The diving class may have been between the Marriott and Black Rock on the same stretch of beach.

We love Ka'anapali Beach and we have taken this catamaran twice from this beach in front of the Hula Grill at the Whaler Village. We got this freebie to visit the Hyatt Ka'anapali and to do an update again.

It is a beauty and I can highly recommend this trip. We took the sunset sailing trip but they have snorkel trips too with whale watching during the season.
