According to Daraius at Million Mile Secrets, the Chase Hyatt card is getting a major downgrade in signup bonus. You just get 40,000 points for signing up. Currently you get two free nights in any hotel category.

I told Rick all of this, and he said our free hotel nights were at a hotel that cost 10,000 points (Hyatt House in Santa Clara, CA) and 25,000 points (Hyatt Regency in NY). So what's the big deal? It could be a big deal for those of you who want to stay at Hyatt in Carmel, Ka'anapali or Europe.

We generally use hotels as a stopover before flying to Hawaii, and those are mostly close to airports. We have used hotel points for road trips as well. Those trips are few and far between, and the places we have driven over the last few years of collecting points and miles, there are actually no Hyatt hotels. We usually stay at Holiday Inn for those stays.

I'm sure this has been covered before, but how many days in advance do you need to book? Does the website need to show availability (ie., don't see any availability for HRC-Kaanapali) or does it come from other inventory. No restrictions on the level of hotel?

We used ours at the Grand Hyatt on Kauai, which was a great value. For once I was slightly ahead of the curve, lol. Too bad that it's going away though.

Bummer. I was hoping to apply next spring for this card to get the pricey Paris location. I think I'd be turned down now due to the 5/24 rule.

What's 5/24 rule?
Chase will automatically deny your application if you have applied for five credits cards in the last 24 months regardless of whether they were issued by Chase or another bank. It appears the Chase Hyatt card doesn't fall under that restriction, however.

What I find interesting although not surprising, is that most of the Chase employees don't know anything about the 5/24 rule. Apparently, it is only those giving final approval for cards that are aware of it.
