How to Safari in South Africa on a Budget - by Vanessa Raphaely/ South Africa Holidays/ Holiday Guides/ The Guardian/ theguardian.com

"A South African safari needn’t cost a packet. Our money-saving tips include going out of season, looking for online deals and doing what the locals do.

The words “budget” and “safari” are not often found in the same sentence. Safaris are a notoriously expensive holiday choice. But there are ways to enjoy a bush experience for under (sometimes well under) £150 per person per night, if you do as the locals do. Despite the fall in sterling’s value, the rand/pound exchange rate means that South African safaris, paid for in the local currency, continue to offer the continent’s best value. While many African lodges in Botswana, Kenya and Tanzania, for example, quote only in US dollars, many excellent options in South Africa do not.
All prices correct at time of writing but approximate because of fluctuations in currency exchange rates..."

I've been to Africa 3 times in the past few years. When I first went $1.00 US got me 8 South African Rand. Today you can get over 14 Rand for a dollar. My last trip was very reasonable.

For anyone interested, I used a South African tour company called Landscape Tours. They offer tours and trips in South Africa and other African countries. I have been to Namaqualand in South Africa, Zanzibar in Tanzania, The Caprivi Strip/Zambezi River region in Namibia and Botswana. The prices are reasonable. They focus on adults over the age of 55, but any adult is welcome on the tours.
