Friends arriving in a week are willing to bring an extra suitcase of donated clothing for orphanage here in PV. A man here now said that airlines will ship it free if it is for charity. Does anyone know how to accomplish that? I am willing to pay fee if necessary but free is even better.
Thanks in advance for suggestions! DonnaD

Have you tried contacting the airline, and asking them?

To relate: To a donation I tried to make last year....We visited a Mayan village last February (2016). The children looked to be in need of sandals, shoes, etc. Our guide told us we could mail to the resort a package and they would get it to the folks at the Mayan village. I packed 30 pairs of children's footwear, new or lightly used, pens and pencils. It cost $60 in US postage. I never heard back from the resort about getting the package. About 6 months later, the package was returned to me, marked, "not picked up" at the Mexican post office! I have since donated the package to a local Spanish Apostolate located near our home.

Tip: Don't mail anything to or from Mexico. Best to hand-deliver any donated goods directly to the party that needs them.

re. the OP's inquiry, I've never heard of checked luggage flying free for donated goods, on any commercial airline. How would the airlines determine if the contents of any particular piece of luggage will be donated? Sounds like an impossibility to me. Nothing from stopping anyone from checking a few extra bags loaded with goods to be donated after arrival.

A friend did some research and found that request to airline must be made 2 weeks in advance.

A priest friend announced to a small parish that we were collecting outgrown jeans for the orphanage. He told me that his car was totally filled with jeans. He thinks he can fill 4 big suitcases. Nice challenge to resolve!!! There are 8 people coming here in next week or so. Hopefully we can get them all here without going over 50 lb limit.
