From London to the South of France; When Trains Are Cheaper Than a Flight
By Rupert Jones/ Saving Money/ Money/ The Guardian/ theguardian.com

This week’s dramatic events on board United Airlines flight 3411 haven’t been a great advert for flying, but if you are travelling to somewhere like the south of France it’s the cheapest way of getting there … isn’t it?

It turns out that in terms of cost, the train can sometimes beat the plane – or at the very least give it a good run for its money.

A Guardian Money price test found that a family of four travelling at the height of this summer’s school holiday can get train tickets from London to Bordeaux and back for £428 all-in, which includes taxes and a decent baggage allowance. That’s less than easyJet once you factor in baggage fees. Meanwhile, taking a direct train from London to Avignon or Marseille in the south of France would come in at £476 return. (It’s perfectly possible that some people may be able to shave a little off these costs by playing around with dates.)...."

Regardless of price, they're certainly more relaxing and scenic than flying, IMO.

The time factor is the biggest block to travelling such distances by train. We're staying in Nice this August and the train from London to Nice takes 20 hours, our flight takes 2. Factor in the time at the airport (although we will be in the BA lounge) it is still more preferable to fly.

This was our train itinerary when we traveled around Europe. The total cost for our family of 4 was $960. I purchased our tickets as they became available ensuring that I got the cheapest price. In all cases (except Paris to Milan) the train was faster than the plane plus you go from city center to city center.

Milan-Pisa $124.14. Each price is the total I paid for 2 adults & 2 children
Pisa-Rome $51.02. (5 tickets)
Edinburgh-London $99.01
London-Paris $192.11
Paris-Amsterdam $108.02
Amsterdam-Bruges $111.06
Bruges-Paris $111.04
Paris-Milan ($164.16)

European train travel was absolutely wonderful. I miss it.

The train from Edinburgh to London takes 4 hours and 40 minutes, flying to London City Airport takes 1 hour 25 minutes, even factoring in the 1 hour checking in period it's still quicker although the train journey is much more scenic and if you manage to get cheap first class tickets from Virgin it makes it that little bit more enjoyable.

European train travel is wonderful........when they're not striking!
