can someone tell me the best UA partner to ask for when choosing flight VCE-DTW?

We are booked on Lufthansa. They had a pilot strike last Thursday when we were flying to Italy. This is 2nd time we've been caught by one of their strikes. I told GA they still owe me a flight on 747, which is why I went with them in first place.

Our flight home is also reserved on Lufthansa.

I guess I could even ask UA to waive cancellation fee if I found flights on another airline, not just a partner. We are booked using miles.

There are a few options among Air Canada. You could use Austrian Air through Vienna and that connects at IAD or JFK. You can also use Swiss Air through Zurich connecting in ORD. From any of those you can take UA to DTW.
