I can't address what it's like during rush hour, but we drove through JAX on I-95 last fall mid-day and it was an easy drive.

We've had different experiences depending on when we're passing through. Last February, during the overnight and early morning hours was a breeze, however on the return trip, mid-day was similar to driving on the beltway.

Even during rush hour, city bypasses can be jammed. We learned that lesson in Atlanta. I would just stay on 95 unless you have a GPS that will reroute you for traffic.

Try Waze. It's free and uses real time traffic data from other users instead of a traffic service that can be 10 min behind.

We've taken the eastern route of 295 several times recently, seemed much quieter

We always take the bypass. Anytime you can get off of I-95 is a good time. As mentioned, the bypass is typically quieter, and imho, a nicer highway in general. We got bogged down on I-95 once and won't go that way again unless we see a slowdown happening on the bypass.
Either route can be backed up, so it's a 50/50 gamble, but Googlemaps GPS or WAZE will alert you to congestion/accidents and suggest the best route as you approach the area. Those are tools worth their weight in gold.

Agree with jme - get Waze it is great.

Construction congestion can also be an issue on 95 in JAX.

I suggest the west bypass. Light daytime traffic when I took it.

take East, but time your drive to avoid rush hour and beach traffic (mostly weekends, spring, summer).

JME:
West or east on 295?

Here's the map which shows both:
East is shorter but closer to various beaches, so it might have heavier traffic.
West is definitely longer, but imho the traffic moves along faster and smoother.

Take your pick.
I would have a plan but rely on real-time advice (Googlemaps or WAZE) to alter that plan if there's a significant stoppage or slowdown. Otherwise they're probably not much different.

Again, thanks everyone. We're leaving tomorrow from HHI and will hit JAX around 12 noon. There shouldn't be too much beach traffic in December so I'll go east.

Will be driving south on 95.
Should I stay on 95 or take 295 around Jacksonville.
If so, which way on 295?
Thanks.
Steve

Florida State Line I-95

The Florida Welcome Center located in Yulee
is a "tourist information house", located near
the Florida/Georgia state line on I-95.
Free Maps & Free Orange Juice.

Exxon Gas Station off I-95
on Jacksonville Airport Rd

Jacksonville Florida
The "River City by the Sea"

I-95 South then I-295 East
towards Jacksonville Beach

Or... continue South on I-95
If it starts to back up
You can always take Rt 202
East on J Turner Butler Blvd.
(Bay Meadows area) to I-295

There is a nice Shell Gas Station
off I-95 before St Augustine Fla

Pass Palm Coast Fla Exit.

Get off I-95 near Daytona
Go West on Interstate I-4.

Rest Area on I-4

You can stay on I-4 or you can take
SR 417 toll road around Orlando
