You can only convert next year's points. The HH points post in January.

You can use current year points to book a hotel room.
The effective conversion rate is only 1 HGVC for 20 HHonors points.

You have to call the HGVC C/S line. It cannot be done online.

To book a room going for 40K HH-points, it'll take 2000 HGVC points. <ouch!>
Perhaps you're swimming in points for which you have no other possible use?

But IMHO, a far better use would be to book RCI for next year.
The points would be drawn from this year's points, then next year's.
<just sayin'>

I believe if you book a hotel converting this years point at the lower rate and later cancel the reservation, the Honors points going into your honors account.

Maybe someone can say if it is worth it to do this if your current year points are going to be lost or if they are rescued points which would expire at the end of the year.

This is correct.

Just pick a Hilton resort that still has awards stays for sometime later this year. You'll need to make the HHonors award reservation via the HGVC Club Services desk. They will make your HHonors reservation using your 2013 HGVC points at the lower conversion rate. (NOTE: They can use a combination of HGVC points and HHonors points to make the HHonors reservation).

You can go back days later to cancel (NOTE: Make sure you cancel before the resort cancellation deadline indicated on the HHonors reservation). The HHonors points associated with your cancelled reservation will be deposited into your HHonors account.

Can HGVC points be gifted to anyone? Or can a reservation be made and gifted or rented?
Yes, you can make a HHonors reservation in another person's name.
No, you can not rent your HHonor reservations.
