I use the upgrade system often. Normally when I'm using "upgrade option" I'm booking last minute, so its either available or not. When I book and really "need that week/period" I do the following.
1. Book what I need
2. Check availability close to"upgrade window"
3. Book 1 bedroom within window
4. Upgrade to 2 Bedroom on "42nd Day"
5. Immediately cancel my original booking.

I usually know availability .. so I book accordingly.

yes so maybe they vacate a 2 BR and I still want a 2 BR but get it for a studio? Why does everyone assume we all want the biggest unit possible. What if the days don't match exactly, they will not upgrade you for 5 days if only 4 days are available. So perhaps not all units get taken in the upgrade process.

Beside NOT every unit booked can likely result in an automatic upgrade, so what is the priority, VIP level, then date of booking, and if they are all the same date then what?

I guess I will just have to wait and see what happens when it gets rolled out because it will only be speculation until then, and maybe even after.
I asked sales some questions when I was at Wyndham Atlantic City. They were "a little evasive" on the VIP Priority but I got impression
* VIP Level
* Then check-in date
* Then "points" within level (so owner with 800K would get priority over 600K (grandfathered) for upgrade)

Most likely has become harder for me to get an upgrade....
