We're heading out to Block Island (II, Neptune Vacation Club) for April vacation. Any special restaurants or places not to miss on the island (with teenagers)? We will have our car. Thanks!

Since it is off season until mid-June and maybe 600-700 full year residents, most businesses are closed for the season or have very restricted operating hours, I wouldn’t know what to recommend for eating or doing.

But you could visit Southeast Light, Sandy Point Light, Mohegan Bluffs, ride bikes, hike and walk the state beach but what are you going to do for the other six days?:D

Since you are bringing your car which IMHO you don’t need, you may want to stop at a large market en route and fill it with food (maybe in Wakefield, RI or along Point Judith Road). There is a very small market on the island but being off season, it will have a very limited inventory.

I can understand that you may need your car to haul your luggage but you won’t need it to get around the island. If leave your car in the parking lot near the ferry terminal (which I’m assuming is Point Judith (Galilee, RI)), you can take one of the daily ferries back to the mainland after you’ve done all that there is to do on BI and use the car to visit Newport, etc.

Other than that, I would recommend bringing books, games, and clothing which you can wear in layers.

I was interested in Neptune House as well, but couldn't find a review...

It will be very quiet. Very few shops, restaurants etc will be open in April. I would make plans ahead of time checking if anyplace you want to go is open.

The Neptune House has an indoor heated pool and unlimited free movie rentals. It sounds like that's what we'll be doing mostly! However, we do like to ride bikes and may ride around the island, weather permitting.

We visited Block Island about 15 years ago in June, and I remember the beach was full of starfish. I look forward to the peace and quiet...

I really think you do need a car on Block Island

About ten years ago we were invited to spend a few nights with a friend who owned at Neptune house. We very much enjoyed it -- the two bedroom unit was fairly small, but OK for 4 people. We were there in August when everything was open.

Take a look at the google map

To see all the gorgeous scenery, you would really need a car.

How do you get to Block Island? Is there a car ferry? Could anyone follow up with additional information on Neptune House? Perhaps post a review on the resort database?

There is a year round auto ferry from Galilee, RI to Block Island. There are seasonal passenger (IIRC) ferries from Newport & Providence. There is also a seasonal auto ferry and hi speed passenger ferry from New London, CT. Also, there is a seasonal passenger ferry from Montuck, NY. There is a small airport if you fly.

The only need, I would see for a car is a lot for luggage and groceries to carry, but there are taxis. You don't need a car to get around the island. I've biked and hiked it whenever I visited.

Do a GOOGLE on "RI ferries" for schedules, but I don't believe the 2009 are out yet.
