Found this IP article interesting as our summer vacation to HHI is coming up and we plan to rent bikes and ride a lot.

Some good points:
1) Most accidents happen at intersections when vehicles make right turns
2) Peds and bikes only have right of way when inside cross walk - not before - different than in other places where I bike a lot (Oregon)
3) HHI averages 1.5 to 2 Bike/Ped vs Vehicle collisions a month

We were at Surfwatch in March, and I have to say that it was EXTREMELY difficult to cross over to Shelter Cove. We would sit in the crosswalk forever, and even when cars did stop, they almost got rear-ended by those behind them. We are used to biking in Sea Pines and this was much more difficult than what we've encountered before. I'm not sure we'll do bikes again unless is Sea Pines, but perhaps it will be better once the tunnel at Shelter Cove area is reopened.

Yup, just last week I warned my son about that and then today I was riding my bike home and almost got smashed by a car that was making a right turn.
