Can someone remind me please, do I get a night credit if I use the reward certificate from the Marriott credit card? We need one more night to keep our platinum status for next year. We are considering a local place to do some Christmas festivities, but need to know if I should pay to book or use my certificate.

Also, any feedback on Gaylord National Harbor?

You do not get a night credit when using a reward certificate. In 2015 the Gaylord was category 5 but it is now a category 6 so you will need to stay in the Residence Inn a block away which has larger rooms and included breakfast and a lower price to park.

I just stayed in the Gaylord last week. It was nice but the room and bathroom were both small and ordinary. The decorations were nice but you don't have to stay there to enjoy them.

Thanks! We were considering the Residence Inn as well, if we could use our certificate and obtain a night credit. We might still stay there depending on the price point. Do they have a lot of holiday activities going on at the Gaylord? Trying to do something a little special for the kiddies, 6 and 3 year old boys.

Are you sure about that? You get nights for points stay now, it was part of the changes at the end of 2015. "Reward nights using points and certificates will count for elite status starting November 1, 2015" It was part of the "Fab Four" announcement.

If you've had any redemption stays during 2016 those should be counted under "Redeemed" in the Nights Detail box in your marriott.com account.

I think Preview and Encore stays still don't count towards Elite Nights, not sure whether third-party bookings count.

I hate the Gaylord during Christmas. They have a cool exhibit/show called ICE geared for kids your age. The reason I don't like it is because it is always mobbed and out of control. They are forced to cater to the folks the show rather than their guests. Most people are coming from the local area. With that said, the Residence Inn is quiet and you can still take the family over to the Gaylord to see everything. National Harbor will be decorated for Christmas, but it isn't a real special vibe. Think about taking the water taxi to Old Town Alexandria if it isn't too cold. Old Town will be decorated.

Thank you Big Matt! I was reading some reviews online last night. People seem to either love or hate it. Might consider a different location.

From T & C on Marriott site - I think #3 will answer your question:

Elite Membership Requirements
spacer.gif

  1. Only nights personally stayed and individually billed at participating Marriott brand or Ritz-Carlton hotels are credited toward Elite Membership achievement and renewal. Accounts may not be combined to achieve Elite Membership.

  2. To achieve or renew Elite Membership status, the following number of personal nights must be earned through Rewarding Events or stayed at participating locations between January 1 and December 31 of any given year:

    Silver 10 to 49 nights

    Gold 50 to 74 nights

    Platinum 75 or more nights

  3. Reward certificate stays will count toward Elite night credit

  4. Hotel charges without a personal overnight stay will not earn room night credit toward Elite membership.
