American like United will start selling Basic Economy seats. For me this means I will have to pay extra if I want to sit next to my kids. Here are the features:

  • 1 item that fits under the seat (no access to overhead bins)*
  • Seats assigned at check-in
  • Fees to choose a specific seat
  • Not eligible for upgrades
  • No flight changes or refunds
  • Board in last group*

I still want to see how this all plays out. The way I'm reading both this, and United's changes are, there will still be Economy. You will get to select your seat, etc., etc. The price for this class may, or may not, stay the same (which really doesn't mean anything since rates change all the time).

A new, lesser Economy class is being introduced that will cost less, and offer fewer benefits.

If the cost of the "regular" Economy tickets doesn't go up as a result of this, I'm fine with it.

From what I understand, this was actually started by Delta (who already have Basic Economy fares in the market), then followed by United and now America.

Remains to be seen whether basic economy will be a lower fare than current "regular economy" or will be the same (with current economy fares increasing). Wanna guess? :ponder: :( :bawl:

I took a friend to the airport recently. He had an emergency trip to his daughter's .... she required immediate surgery. He is not a 'flyer' as he would rather drive 1200 miles than fly. He was telling me the price and luggage fees on the 20 minute ride to the airport ... close to a $900 OW PLUS baggage. I checked the Southwest website before leaving to get him ... flights for that day and almost the same time frame but into a nearby airport under $300 OW. He does not like that airport ... so I just drove.

Southwest is currently my 'go to' airline also.

Before SWA, it was Eastern Airlines and TWA. ;)

No carry on so an additional $50-60 RT. No guarantee seat without paying more. Model Spirit airlines. Allows them to advertise lower fares on Expedia, kayak etc.
sometimes I am forced to fly these airlines, but never by choice. So happy to have Alaska/Virgin and SWA available for most of my flights.

What happened to TED? Remember TED? The last three letters of United, and those were economy flights and seats. My sister-in-law was hysterical over the TED name and the entire idea of it. She was a flight attendant for 33 years.
