Also make sure hearing loss is ruled out. It's not unusual for a patient to be improperly diagnosed with dementia when the diagnosis is really severe hearing loss.

We often wondered if Cliff's father slid into dementia quicker because he refused to wear his ill fitting "cheap" hearing aids and thus was not properly stimulated by and engaged in his environment. The three siblings offered to get him properly fitted and pay the bill, but going hungry during the Depression had so totally warped his dad and mom's perspective that they simply couldn't spend money or allow it to be spent on them.
