All Blue-Eyed People Have a Single Ancestor in Common
By Zach Williams and Jessica Orwig/ Business Insider/ businessinsider.com

"New research shows that all blue-eyed people share a common ancestor. This person lived more than 6,000 years ago and carried a genetic mutation that has now spread across the world.

The exact cause remains to be determined but scientists do know that eye color began to change long before recorded history began. The following is a transcript of the video.

All blue-eyed people have one ancestor in common, born around 6,000-10,000 years ago. Blue eyes are caused by a gene mutation. For years, researchers had searched for it on the OCA2 gene. The OCA2 gene determines how much brown pigment is in our eyes. But what they were looking for wasn't there at all.

The mutation was found on an entirely different gene called HERC2. HERC2 turns off OCA2, meaning it turns off the brown and reveals the blue. Every blue-eyed person has this exact same mutation...."

The article said blue eyed people come from European descent. I have blue eyes and my ancestors are European. So interesting, thanks for sharing .

At first, I thought the title read, "Bug-Eyed People..." and how strange.

Interesting story but I wish they had expanded more. What about green eyed people?
We have a beautiful green eyed, red haired grand-daughter! Her mom's side is from Ireland & Scotland.

Here's an interesting article about green eyes that I found today. I was also interested as my eyes are green, though at times they seem gray. The article also discusses what causes eye color changes (or perceptions thereof).

I am blue eyed. I am surprised how there seems to be a somewhat disproportionate number of actors with blue eyes. Just an anecdotal observation....

Someone I know who reads alot of research about various topics, recently told me that copper must be present in the uterus for blue eyes to develop. sorry can't cite the source but I found that interesting!

This is actually ridiculous purely from a logic standpoint. For instance, you can get blue eyes from damage to the eyes, not from genetics. Eyes, like skin, are colored by melanin, which is increased or decreased from many various factors. For instance, your eyes will generally lighten as you age. So... nope, it is not true that "all blue eyed people" anything other than "have blue eyes."
