Alaska Timeshare

Hi,
I am a total newbie to the world of Timeshares. I just bought a couple of timeshares that I eventually want to put up for exchange. Right now, I am looking to book a trip to Alaska, but can't find any timeshares there. Any idea if there are any? Maybe I should expand my horizon beyond RCI, but I really don't know any better . Any advice would be helpful.

There aren't any I know of. Used to be one or two. When we went to Alaska we did a safari with Alaska Wildland Adventures. Glad we did as we were only there for 10 days and it ain't easy getting around a state like Alaska and to really get in some major sights and experiences.

Thank you! It's a little surprising though, that there aren't any at all. That's one place I'd love to go back to year after year . Thanks for the recommendation too. Let me check out the Alaska Wildland Adventures and see what options they offer. I've settled on three destinations to stay at Anchorage, somewhere near Denali and Seward.

In order for a timeshare to be affordable for all owners, it needs to have very nearly year-round full occupancy. Alaska's climate is such that it's season is probably about 10-12 weeks a year. That's why the cruise ships start running Alaska routes in about May and end in September- and that's the most temperate area of the state. NOBODY wants to go to Fairbanks or Denali in December or January when it is dark 24/7 and 40 below zero.

Look for timeshares in tropical areas.

Understandable. But I am looking to visit (rent).... I have two timeshares so far, both in Orlando ... I'm also looking for a good deal in Hawaii. But right now, I just want to rent a timeshare in Alaska, if there's one .

Probably better to check out VRBO or similar outfit to rent a condo or home.

What we're saying is that there aren't timeshares in Alaska. Try VRBO or homeaway.com for rentals. Also, owning in Orlando, Vegas, Mexico, is not so hot either, because these places are so overbuilt with timeshares that renting there is often cheaper than the underlying maintenance fees, with zero buy-in cost. The exchange value is relatively low, while Hawaii is quite costly. Not saying that exchanging into Hawaii is impossible, but you'll need to deposit your week(s) early, and set up an ongoing search for resorts that interest you early. You won't find them in the online catalog. Those are just leftovers after the ongoing searches are filled.

You're absolutely right. I just checked. It's supposed to exchange through RCI, but doesn't show up in RCI's directory ... Thank you though. I'll give RCI a call tomorrow and see what the deal is.

It's not a timeshare, but a motel (though a really nice motel). There's no real advantage to booking via an exchange. Sometimes the exchange companies have options in motels, usually via their cash options i.e. Getaways for II or Extra Vacations for RCI. Worldmark has a deal with them for some room access but there are less than 5 rooms available and they are VERY expensive. The cost for a motel room is 5 times the cost of a 2 BR unit at a WM resort. For Alaska, you are better off going another route.
