Got a call yesterday from Project Transitions [phone number removed]. The caller claimed that they are a "non-profit" organization that helps people get the money they were conned out of by Timeshare scammers.

They keep 35% of the money collected. I thanked him and hung up

Here on Cape Cod we had a similar project going on here, a group called Timeshare Advisors were collecting fees from owner of Edgewater Beach Resort in Dennisport saying they would help them get their money back....The problem at Edgewater was filing of deeds, not really a scam.

The MA Attorney General caught on and stopped them, and I think this is another one...

Anyone have any experience with Project Transitions?

This gimmick is just the latest timeshare scam - I haven't seen one yet, that was legitimate.

How can you be "non-profit" and keep "35% of the money collected?"

501 Status

Their website claims they have applied for 501 c 3 status with the IRS. I did a search of non profits/charities with their name on irs.gov and nothing came up. They may have applied, but no status yet.

As far as a 501 C 3 keeping 35%... Charities have employees that do not work for free, unless they are really nice. I am not sure what they are claiming but the 35% could be to cover their costs, as well as the amounts they give to charity...that they claim.

Their corporate filing with FL was 3/7/2011. Not sure if I should list the names of the directors but it is a pretty easy search on the FL Dept of state website.

It was started by same guys as "Buy Owner Resort Marketing" which was raided back in July of 2010 by State Investigators.

I really like their office building though: Here http://maps.google.com/maps?q=2044+South+Atlantic+Avenue,+Daytona+Beach+Shores,+Florida+32118&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=2044+S+Atlantic+Ave,+Daytona+Beach+Shores,+Volusia,+Florida&gl=us&ll=29.200285,-80.995514&spn=0.013318,0.027874&t=h&z=16&layer=c&cbll=29.200285,-80.995514&panoid=Z20Wq-a7WWYhN03qb8QwsA&cbp=12,152.47,,0,0

These Guys Still active

Received a call from this company, Project Transition, and talked with them for a while to see what their pitch was. They say they will take your timeshare for a $1250 processing fee, then use the week for raffles to raise money for charitable organizations. By doing this they say they will provide you with the documentation so you can take a tax deduction since you donated to charity. And since they give you an inflated amount on the value of your timeshare, your tax deduction is (in the case they gave me) triple the amount of the $1250 you paid to them. I would bet once you gave them the $1250 you would never hear from them again and the timeshare would still be in your name.

Well, if you really wanted, you could sell it yourself by posting it on Ebay and donating the proceeds to a legitimate Charity.

Check out lengthy thread here featuring Senior Director and donating to his charity.

If you like colonoscopys, root canals and IRS audits then donate a worthless car or time share to a charity and claim a $5K tax deduction.
