We'll be going to this resort via exchange for Thanksgiving. This will be our first time in NOLO. We have read some reviews of the resort, and it sounds like it's nice enough and in a good location for public transportation. We will probably not rent a car, in part because we were told parking would be $23+ per day, and RT airport transportation seems reasonable.

We plan to do the typical NOLO sightseeing, but are wondering if there other things we should consider. Also, if we were to need a rental car for a day, maybe two, is there someplace nearby where we could get one? And finally, are there any restaurants we should go to, considering we are not foodies and lean toward casual dining, and that we'll be utilizing public transport?

Any ideas will be appreciated!

Go to the Central States Timesharing board in the Regions section. Do a search for New Orleans. There are lots of lengthy posts there (some even by me - ahem!). Ron Parise is kind of the guru of Avenue Plaza, or maybe it's Obi Wan. He has a bunch of very informative posts.

All day bus pass is like $3. includes all Street Car lines. Gotta ride the St. Charles line in it's entirety. Red Gravy for breakfast/brunch, meatballs are out of this world. A Court of Two Sisters is an event for brunch. Mulates for everything NOLA, Mandinas, is awesome, but a bit of a ride by street car. Pretty much, any place with a line, go early the next day.

If you want to see a plantation or two you may want to rent a car but if this is your first trip there will be plenty to see downtown. Definitely buy a multi day pass for the the street cars. If you like Olives at all you must have a muffaletta but they are huge so share. Also no trip to New Orleans would be complete without a morning coffee and beignets at Cafe Du Monde.

There are tours that will pick you up at the Plaza for tours of the Mansions and for about anything else. Red Fish on Bourban Street for their Oysters and Triple Chocolate Bread Pudding. Frenchman Street for music. In fact you should order Bread Pudding at every Restaurant because they are all very different. Trolley Car Cafe for Breakfast. Only a short walk from the Plaza. WWII Museum but to do it right takes a couple days. People give directions a little different in NOLO. They are normally not north, south, east, west but up river, down river, towards the river, or away from the river. If you ride the Street car to the end of the line up river (to your right as you leave the Plaza) you will be in the Irish area. We had a great time in NOLO for 2 weeks in October 3 years ago.

We got a Groupon for a cuisine tour. It mixed history and food, taking us to 4 local places to sample gumbo, jambayala, muffalata, and po boys. We really enjoyed it.

Before this goes any further I just MUST clarify that it's NOLA not NOLO. It stands for New Orleans, LA.

Things we've done that we enjoy:
-take the street car
-French Market
-drive out to take a swamp tour
-walk around Garden District
-catch a show or concert

We go to New Orleans regularly and these are on our list for future visits:
-butterfly and insectarium
-visit the mint
-do a boat tour

In addition to the great recommendations above (French Market, Garden District, Street Cars, etc.), we really enjoyed the Mardi Gras World tour. We didn't enjoy the zoo and we really enjoy going to zoos. We haven't made it to the WWII museum, but hear it's amazing.

Places we like to eat at when in NOLA,

Muffuletta from Central Market
Cafe Du Monde
Emeril's restaurant in French Quarter
Rousseau's Market (not the one in the French Quarter)
Rum House (Garden District)

One of our favorite restaurant is Domenica

http://www.domenicarestaurant.com/

This restaurant is a John Besh restaurant and they have a happy hour at the bar area for 1/2 price pizzas and drinks. The pizzas have very interesting and creative toppings and sauces. NOLA is by far one of the best cities, IMHO, for foodies and amazing cuisine. Have a great time! Can't wait for our next visit to NOLA.
