I get that yahoo is terrible but I haven't been able to 100% migrate over to gmail yet. I check up on my security frequently and just noticed that every time that I log into my yahoo email from my cell phone, it says that it is being logged into from Herndon, VA. When I look into the details, the IP address is the same as my home IP address (San Diego), and logging out on my PC logs me out on my cell so I am sure that it is the same device.

Any ideas on what is causing this to happen? Do I care? I use two step authentication on this account.

Is your cell on wifi at your home? Who is your internet provider at home?

Yes the cell is on Wi-Fi. We're on Spectrum now. When I look at my logins for Yahoo it shows the exact same IP address using either my phone or my PC, just the location for the phone shows Herndon Va.

Just a guess, but that may be the headquarters of the comm-system for your cell phone, which is likely not your provider.

My convoluted reasoning is that, in the late 70's, there were comm-companies were based in Northern Virginia, such as Satellite Business Systems, later sold to MCI, which itself is now a subsidiary of Verizon (like Yahoo!, AOL & CompuServe).

Makes sense that its the same Ip address, because both your computer and phone (when connected to wifi in your home) are both accessing the internet through the same WAN ip of your modem.

I believe the corporate HQ for Time Warner/Specturm is in Hearndon, VA, so the ip lookup that Yahoo is using to get the location must be tied to the HQ for that IP address. Note that for this reason trying to locate a device connected to the internet via IP address is not a perfect science, far from it.

When you log in from your PC (in SD), does it show SD? If so, the PC may be using an IPv6 ip that better tracks the location, that teh phone doesn't use.

Although my primary email account is Gmail, I also have a Yahoo account. They keep requesting that I "click" to confirm something or other about my account. When I "click" it says they are sending me a text message with a code I need to input to proceed. Problem is I don't have text messaging on my old clam shell phone. I ran into something similar the other day at my Bank who said I had to use their app to do something or another. It bugs me that they all assume that everyone has a smart phone, text messaging and voice mail. I don't. I use my phone the old fashioned way, to make and receive phone calls.

Yep, I just don't use anything requiring me to use what I don't wanna use.

Way too many places now want you to log in with your FB account. I don't do FB and will not. Even if I did, I'm not taking those credentials elsewhere. If sites only want me to join if I am part of FB, their loss, I move on.

I will keep saying no, even if I am the last one saying no. I'm not buying a smart phone, I'm not living my life by phone or internet or Facebook. Sure, there be an app for everything you want to be able to do by phone, but that's not really a compelling argument for me, since all I wanna do with my phone is make and receive calls.

You're not the last one saying no, Geekette. I, too, do not have a FB account, will not have a FB account, and will pass on those sites that insist I have one in order to join their site. I know I have very little privacy anymore, but not having a FB account at least gives me the comforting illusion that I still have some degree of online privacy without it.

I don't have a FB account either. My Daughter opened one for me 5 or 6 years ago. They really made it difficult for me to close it. I think it took me almost 2 weeks of haggling with them to get it done.
